How old should my child be for Kindergarten?
In 2010, California passed a new law, “The Kindergarten Readiness Act” (SB 1381), that changes the age when children are eligible to enter Kindergarten. Under this new law children must turn 5 years old on or before September 1st of the school year in order to enroll in traditional Kindergarten.
Who attends Kaiser?
Kaiser is proud of our diversity. As you can see from the pie chart below, we are one of the most racially diverse schools in Oakland. On the map below, each dot represents a Kaiser student’s home, so you can see that although our school is tucked away in one corner of our city, Kaiser’s community is all of Oakland!
Although the OUSD options process gives priority to families in a school’s immediate area, as well as families with an older child already enrolled at that school, by choosing Kaiser as your first choice in the enrollment process, and by enrolling before the first deadline, chances are increased of being assigned to our school. (According to OUSD, in 2014, 82% of kindergarten applicants received their first choice of school.)
Why do families choose Kaiser?
There are a number of elements that draw families to Kaiser:
- Excellent teaching from an experienced and dedicated staff.
- High academic standards with individualized student supports.
- Fully integrated visual arts for all students in all grades.
- Music education for all students, including instrumental (band/orchestra) for all 4th and 5th graders.
- Small and safe school environment.
- Highly engaged families and a spirit of volunteerism.
- A “safe space” that is welcoming to ALL families. (LGBTQ, multi-racial, adoptive, foster, etc.)
- We are a California Distinguished School.
- Partners with Oakland Promise: Every kindergarten is given a college savings account!
