Happy Holidays Kaiser Families:
As we head into our winter break and look forward to a new year, I want to wish you all a joyous and restful vacation.
I’m excited to announce a new program for Kaiser Elementary that will begin when we return from our winter break. Kaiser will be starting an African American Male Achievement (AAMA) group. AAMA has been doing transformative work in Oakland since 2010. They have recently expanded their program in elementary schools. We are fortunate to have DeMareon Gipson joining our staff as the AAMA lead. This work will have strong SEL and academic components. Mr. Gipson will also be running a similar program at Sankofa Elementary.
In the new year there will be opportunities for AAMA students at both sites to collaborate and develop their leadership as we forge our new path forward. There is a powerful documentary that chronicles the work of AAMA. I recommend that all Kaiser community adults watch the 3 minute trailer, and dig deeper if you wish. Links to the trailer and the entire documentary can be found at. tinyurl.com/AAMAchannel
This winter break comes at about the midpoint of OUSD’s enrollment window. I want to thank the nearly 100 Kaiser families who have been to one of the Kaiser-Sankofa enrollment tours. There are 5 more scheduled between now and the February 7th close of the first enrollment window. You can find out more and RSVP for a tour at tinyurl.com/enroll2020.
- Current 5th graders, rising to middle school: You will certainly want to tour schools and complete the enrollment deadline by February 7. There is an awesome new OUSD middle school website I would encourage all to check out: oaklandinthemiddle.org/
- Families of current Kaiser kinder – 4th graders who will be going to Kaiser-Sankofa, do not need to complete the enrollment process: your child will automatically be enrolled there.
- Families of current Kaiser kinder-4th families who are considering a different school should complete the enrollment process. Current K-4th grade Kaiser families qualify for an “opportunity ticket”. This increases a child’s priority in the enrollment process and is automatically considered for families who complete enrollment by February 7. More information about OUSD enrollment is at www.ousd.org/enroll.
As we go into 2020, I have a recommended New Year’s Resolution for you all. Educate yourselves about the Schools and Community First Act. I can’t use school resources or time (i.e. this newsletter) to advocate a position on this. However I can educate you to the fact that this is a very important piece of legislation with the potential of making a huge impact on public education in California.
As we close out 2019, I want to say THANKS again to all Kaiser teachers and staff for all you do for our kiddos; to the incredible army of family volunteers who help out in so many ways; and to our kiddos who bring their curiosity, love, and eagerness to Kaiser every day!
Have a very merry winter break! ~ Dennis Guikema, Principal
