Principal’s Message – February 5, 2020

Hello Kaiser Elementary Community:
February is African American History Month, and I want to kick off this Pink Panther with acknowledgement of Kaiser students, families and teachers for the tremendous academic growth of African American students at Kaiser. We have had several years of consistent growth at Kaiser Elementary, and it is exciting to note that African American students’ rate of growth has outpaced our school’s average. One of the many areas where African American culture and literature shines at Kaiser and across our district is in the MLK Oratorical Fest. Many Kaiser students have participated in our site Oratorical. This week Kaiser students took home two gold and two silver medals at a district-wide competition, and we will again be well represented in the finals! An HBO documentary was filmed last year during the MLK Oratorical Fest that will be available beginning February 18 on HBO. To view the inspiring trailer and find out more, check out hbo.com/documentaries/we-are-thedream

February is also an important time in the enrollment process for the next school year. All 5th grade families should have completed their online enrollment form for middle school by this Friday, February 7. More information about enrollment is at ousd.org/enroll. Specific information about OUSD middle schools is at Oaklandinthemiddle.org.

Families of current Kaiser kindergarten-4th grade families who are planning to come to the merged school on the Sankofa campus next year do not need to enroll, as your child will automatically be placed with us. If you are considering another school, you will want to meet the February 7 deadline to qualify for the “opportunity ticket” and the first wave of school assignments.

I want to give a heartfelt appreciation to those who are on the Kaiser-Sankofa Design Team. Family members and staff from both schools have made a tremendous commitment. Upon a foundation of respect and trust, there has been much accomplished. This past weekend we were able to deepen our work in a highly productive retreat. We will be reporting out February 19 about overarching themes, such as mission, vision, and naming of the school as well as more specific areas of focus, such as English Language Arts and school wide culture and climate.

There will continue to be opportunities for community to be built between members of both school communities. Hold the dates for a Family Valentines Day Dance (sponsored by The Golden State Warriors!) at Sankofa on Friday evening, February 14, and a Kaiser, Sankofa, Peralta community BBQ on Saturday afternoon, February 15 at Bushrod Recreation Center.
