Happy New Year Kaiser Elementary Families!
Carl Sagan said, “Science is more than a body of knowledge. It is a way of thinking.” If you have observed a science lesson at Kaiser, you have seen thinking and discovery in action.
This winter Kaiser teachers started using an exciting updated science curriculum that is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards. In our Wednesday professional development session we took time to get to know the new materials and plan our lessons. We also looked at ways that we could use science to boost literacy. Access to complex texts and the use of science notebooks are integral to all science units. Ask your child about what they have done recently in science. They should have a lot to share!
On another note, in my column last month I mentioned a current theme in our 4th and 5th grades of being an “upstander”. Each week for this month, students can nominate peers for being an upstander. I asked Kaiden M., one of those who was nominated, his thoughts. “It feels good to be an upstander because you feel more safe and helpful”, he said. Viola G. added that student should, “try to have this mindset not just some of the time, but all of the time.”
As we dive in to this new year, I encourage you all to stay highly engaged at Kaiser. We have an important PTA meeting this month that I hope all will attend. And we need your help for the upcoming auction, the largest fundraiser of the year.
